Because the heroes in Overwatch 2 are so varied, players can explore a wide range of character origin stories. How Overwatch 2's Zarya Evolved
In her youth, Zarya's Siberian homeland was destroyed in a conflict with the Omnics, with the defeat of the Russian army against the Machines coming with adversity for the war-torn country. To make matters worse, the battle had an even harsher outcome for Zarya as her father died around this time. Growing up in a war-torn home without a father pushed Zarya to gain enough power so that her people would never suffer so much again, which explains her love of weightlifting and military service.
Despite her success as a weightlifter, Zarya had to withdraw from the competition to protect her village from more omnic attacks, and her success as a soldier earned her a and her particle cannon - fans will know this character from Sombra's animated short. Armed with the weapon players use in Overwatch 2 matches, Zarya continues to fight for her people and keep her homeland safe.
Ultimately, Zarya was tasked with tracking down Sombra, who manipulated Katya into her puppet. While on this mission, Zarya found herself in Numbani, and was understandably disturbed to see omnics and humans living in harmony. However, despite spending her entire life fighting them and treating them as monsters, she slowly begins to take a liking to one person in particular: a hacker named Lynx Seventeen. Although she eventually found Sombra by Lynx's side, she decided to go ahead and save Lynx -- a move that shocked even Zarya herself. She also discovers that Katya is using technology from the benevolent Omnics to fight corrupt elements in Siberia, which only adds to Zarya's ambivalence.
Just as Torbjorn's relationship with Bastion made the former less obnoxious about omnics, this event was crucial to Zarya's character development. Unfortunately, she was forced to abandon her childhood town when the omnics broke through the Russian defenses and the army was forced to retreat, and she had yet another life-altering experience. Apparently, she went to help anyway, and on the way she met Cole Cassidy. Cassidy helped her save her sisters and some of the children to safety. Despite losing her hometown, Zarya was given a new home in Overwatch, with Cassidy promising she could play a bigger role on the revamped team.
Zarya was a great soldier and it was hard to argue with that, and she agreed to join the new Overwatch organization. With Zarya and other new additions like D.Va, Overwatch's second comeback could flourish, and the former powerlifter certainly looks promising in the future as part of the team. As hard as Zarya was to begin with, Zarya was much more influential as a Russian defender, and her willingness to move beyond blind hatred for omnics opened up some interesting narratives in Overwatch 2 Chance.
