While there doesn't seem to be much of a reason to choose to play a wizard over other spellcasting classes like a wizard, there are plenty of story and role-playing reasons to do so; in terms of attack power, wizards are one of the most powerful classes in Baldur's Gate 3, and their power comes from innate abilities rather than having to be learned to tell a story. The Wild Magic subcategory also does a good job of adding to the mage's background, with powerful but uncontrolled magic that deals damage to both enemies and allies, creating the potential for a character who is very powerful but finds it difficult to control his magical talents.
Another advantage wizards have is their charm proficiency, which makes them more savvy than ordinary wizards. They get four cantrips at 4th level and need to prepare spells before casting them.
